The Brave and the Bold

Original Airdate: March 17, 2002

Short Summary:

On the Watchtower the rest of the Justice League is immediately alerted to the disappearance of Central City. They investigate and find that Central City is actually protected my an impentatrable force field. Batman alerts them to a similar occurrence in Africa. The League leaves to investigate.

Meanwhile, back in Central City, Flash and Green Lantern are left to fend for themselves in a city mind-controlled by Grodd. They try to stop Grodd from launching missiles at Gorilla City, but they fail. Lantern heads off after the missiles leaving Solvar and Flash to defeat Grodd. At Gorilla City, the rest of the League finally convince the Gorillas that they?re there to help and aren?t spies. The League manage to take out the missiles and Flash manages to outwit Grodd.

The Gorillas thank The League, and reveal that Grodd has been left a brain dead vegetable.

Review:
The Brave and the Bold was a great episode that played off the difference between the stoic Lantern and the whimsical Flash. Although their dialogue was perfect, and was a great insight into both their characters, neither seemed to be using their powers to full effect. In the opening scene, Flash has trouble catching up to a car! Even Barry Allen was as fast as the speed of sound, which is much faster than a car. No Flash has ever been this slow, and it really shows. It?s just painful to watch Flash so stupidly slow. Green Lantern?s powers were used much better, but it still seemd at any time he could have encased Grodd in a big bubble?and carried him somewhere where he couldn?t do any damage?like the Watchtower?? Grodd?s is a villain of Justice League caliber, he just needs to be written better. Don?t get me wrong, I loved this episode I just felt their powers were underused. The writers need to decide exactly what the limits and capabilities of the Leagues are, and they need to define them clearly. Then they need to stress those limits to the max. They?re getting the characters down correctly, just not their powers.

  • Did anybody else catch Flash call Solvar ?Mojo?? as in ?Mojo JoJo? from the Powerpuff girls?
  • The whole Batman/Wonder Woman scene was cute, I wouldn?t expect any romance to come out of there though?
  • During Flash?s dream we see him getting hit by a bolt of lightning. That doesn?t necessarily mean that?s his origin, but I believe the whole ?hit by lighting? thing was Barry Allen?s origin. I don?t know the writers have ever said if this is Barry or Wally, but I was under the impression it was Wally, based on his wittiness.

"Could be, but usually when a city is this empty flesh eating zombies are involved"
"You watch too many movies"
"Maybe you don't watch enough"

"Flash don't heckle the Super-Villian"

"You're a bigger fool than I thought"
"Oh yeah? Well you're naked!"
