Metamorphosis

Original Airdate: October 04, 2002

Short Summary:

At the beginning of the part two, Metamorpho is about to kill Green Lantern when the Justice League comes in and saves the day. Metamorpho is able to hold his own though, synthesizing kryptonite, and disabling Hawkgirl?s wings. His mastery of fire is also helpful against J?onn. Stagg videotapes the fight, planning to use the footage to help him sell his Metamorpho mutagen.

Rex escapes and tries to find Sapphire. He discovers that it was Stagg and not Green Lantern who betrayed him so he goes back to confront Stagg. Stagg is prepared for him though and freezes Rex. Metamorpho escapes once again though, and this time confronts Stagg while he is in the process of moving a new mutagen. During the battle, part of Stagg?s brain is transferred to the new mutagen and it becomes a huge slime creature.

It?s up to the Justice League and Metamorpho to stop Stagg before he gets to Sapphire. The Justice League is relatively ineffective, but Batman discovers a neutralizing agent. Metamorpho gets the formula and turns into the agent, destroying Stagg once and for all. Rex appears to have died in the process, but he manages to piece himself together to both the Justice League and Sapphire?s delight.

Review:
What can I say? I?m a sucker for tragic morphing characters. I loved both Clayface and Inque from Batman and Batman Beyond. Generally the morphing and shape-shifting characters lend to amazing action sequences and Metamorpho certainly didn?t disappoint. Also unlike Clayface and Inque, we didn?t end the episode with the shapeshifter dissolving in rain or some other ?half-death? It?s nice to see one of these characters live for a change, and hopefully come back to fight another day. Metamorpho exceeds his predecessors by adding a lot of fun elements into his arsenal. (pun intended!) The fire, kryptonite and clay were all innovative ways to use his powers. The battle with J?onn really was quite impressive and reminds me why I love shapeshifter battles so much.

Green Lantern?s character was developed further, and it was nice to see him and Hawkgirl explore ?the road not taken.? Obviously he took a backseat to Metamorpho, but it?s nice to see him get another episode. The overall feel of the episode was that truly was a golden-age story upgraded for modern times. Stagg and Metamorpho still felt like they were old-fashioned but their agendas and powers were upgraded appropriately to the new Justice League.

The only downside to the episode was the way Stagg handled Metamorpho when he had him frozen. It seemed really out of character for him to toss Rex aside without insuring his death. I guess it?s a standard evil-villain fault, but to see Metamorpho just melt back to life was really uninspired. The whole King Kong feel to the end of the episode, was also a bit cheesy, but it?s nice to know that the writers realized it too and slipped in Rex?s ?what I wouldn?t give for a couple of biplanes right about now? line.

Still I?d have to say this was a solid episode and a great way to introduce a new character. Often these kinds of episode can be poor as the Justice League has to take a backseat, but Metamorpho lives up to the expectations.
