Only a DreamOriginal Airdate: October 11, 2003
Review: It?s official. The second season of Justice League is hands down better than the first. Only a Dream follows the already amazing Twilight of the Gods and Tabula Rasa, and it doesn?t disappoint. Why is season two so much better than season one? Season two simply provides the League with villains that are appropriate to the League?s power level. Darkseid/Braniac, Amazo/Luthor, and Dr. Destiny are all villains that could potentially beat the League. We aren?t getting villains like Deadshot, Felix Faust, or Aresia who shouldn?t be able to do much, but always seemed to get the upper hand. In Only a Dream villain cameos run wild, but the League takes all of them out without any trouble, and that?s the way it should be. Villains like Firefly, Volcana, and Copperhead might be able to give one Leaguer a problem, but against seven leaguers, they don?t stand a chance.
Speaking of cameos, Only a Dream was a great way to get tons of cameos in where they made sense. We got to see Joker, Luthor, Lois, Jimmy, Perry, Snapper Carr, and more. Cameos are always fun as long as they make sense.
Dr. Destiny was a great villain, who knew he couldn?t take the League on physically, so he drew them into his home field, the dream world. A great way to make the League vulnerable when they?re used to being unstoppable. Many of the visuals were creepy and surreal, as many dreams often are. The best part was how he waited and waited, until he knew he could get most of the leaguers at once. We really didn?t see Dr. Destiny until the second half of the episode, which did a good job of keeping the viewers in suspense and on the edge of their seats.
It?s awesome to finally see Martian Manhunter use his telepathic powers to a new level. In Tabula Rasa we first saw J?onn extend his power, and in Only a Dream it was obvious that his unique gift was the only thing that could save the League. It was great to see him and Batman team up to tackle Dr. Destiny in both realms at once. Batman?s coffee and radio were also jokes that were appropriately funny.
Oh, and did we actually see Green Lantern use his ring creatively for once? Sure it was just a big dome to cut off Volcana and Firefly?s air supply, but it beats his standard ?green laser?.
Here?s hoping that we?ll see Dr. Destiny in the future. Even better, it?d be great to see him team up with the other mind-altering JL villain, The Key. Season two has yet to disappoint, and hopefully this upward trend will continue.
