Maid of HonorOriginal Airdate: October 19, 2003
Review: Midway through the first season fans of the Justice League were full of complaints. ?Superman?s too weak!? ?Where are all the secret identities?? ?The Villains just aren?t bad enough? ?Where?s Lois? Jimmy? Alfred? Etc.? ?Character development is a bit weak.?
Within the first four episodes of Season 2, the writers show that they?ve been listening to us. Twilight established Superman as the Powerhouse he should have been. Tabula Rasa and Only a Dream gave us League worthy villains. What would Maid of Honor have in store for us?
First off Wonder Woman doesn?t even get into costume until two-thirds of the way through the first episode. Whereas first season, Diana wore her costume everywhere, this season she shows that the Battle Togs aren?t practical for everyday use. Batman show?s that he spends time outside the costume as well. Secondly, we don?t even see a third hero until the second half! We had a good 30 minutes with just Bruce and Diana.
I know that many people were fans of the whole Batman/Wonder Woman thing, and I guess this episode was a great way to develop their ?relationship.? I didn?t even have to see Bruce to know that it was his voice asking Diana to dance. I hit the roof before the music even started. Then as the action got underway, I figured we wouldn?t see much more of them. Then at the end of the episode?
?You still owe me a dance.?
?I have no idea what you?re talking about?
Heh. That had to put an exclamation mark on an already excellent episode. I hope future episodes develop the relationship between more character pairs, as the banter between Bruce and Diana was amazingly fun.
Vandal Savage as a villain took me by complete surprise. Savage had the best episode in Season 1, and he doesn?t disappoint this time around. When he showed up, it was hard to figure out what his exact plan was. (Yeah World Domination is obvious, but HOW?) We finally get his origin and his backstory. I thought it would have been better for Batman to figure out his origin, but I guess he can?t know everything. Vox was a great foil to Savage, with a fun power. His voice box was a nice touch, keeping us in the dark until he opened his mouth.
The best thing I liked about this episode was that the League seemed to have an attitude where they were sure they were going to win. It wasn?t about whether they?d win, but how they would. From Green Lantern calmly saving the crew of the Javelin, to Flash ?recovering? from the chill of space by dismantling Vandals forces. I got the feeling the League was in control the whole time. The action was amazing too, Batman and Wonder Woman moved like a team. J?onn?s use of his shapeshifting was simply fun to watch. The biggest improvement this season is that I never find myself saying ?Well why don?t they just do blank?? The League is finally living up to their potential.
I also have to devote a paragraph to the whole marriage sequence. What can I say but, ?Wow.? Has there ever been a cooler animated sequence? Well yes, but this one was pretty damn good.
I?ll honestly say that Season 1 really wasn?t as good as I said it was in my past reviews. Not that the episodes are horrible, but now that we have 4 hours of Season 2 under our belts, I see that we should have been expecting better. Maybe it just took a year for the writers to get into the groove of things. Maid of Honor, was simply a great episode. Great humor, great action, great villains. I don?t see Season 2 losing any steam anytime soon either. I can?t wait to see the Justice Lords, or Doomsday. Makes me wonder what the Joker has in mind this time around.
