The Terror BeyondOriginal Airdate: November 08, 2003
Review: Huh? What?s this? The Defenders in a Justice League episode? Make no mistake, this was a tribute (rip-off?) To Marvel?s Rag-Tag group of Loners. Dr. Fate, Aquaman and Grundy just screamed Doctor Strange, Namor and Hulk. Still, no matter what the inspiration, The Terror Beyond, was a great episode that didn?t disappoint at all.
Last time we had a magic user, we got the paltry Felix Faust and Lord Hades. Not only that, be they didn?t even touch on Superman?s vulnerability to Magic. This time around, they didn?t make the same mistake. They brought in an entire demon invasion and made sure Superman got trounced like he should have against Faust.
The last time we saw Aquaman, it was sort of 50/50. He proved he was badass by cutting of his own hand, but in the end all he did was let his weak little brother fall to his death. Which was pretty cool, but it wasn?t really a League worthy accomplishment. This time he proves his worth, by beating Wonder Woman and fighting off a demon invasion. The best scene, involved Fate sending Aquaman back to Atlantis. How many times have we seen a group of heroes not get along, but manage to pull together in the end and resolve their differences? When Aquaman refuses to help, Dr. Fate doesn?t even think twice and sends him away. Oh and giving him a big magic trident bumps him up a lot on the power scale. New Trident/Hook Aquaman beats the pants off of whiny ?I speak to fish? hippie Aquaman any day.
Backstory? We get lots of it here. We find out the origin of Grundy and Atlantis and learn a lot more about Thanagar in the process. It might have taken awhile, but we?re finally fleshing out a lot of the characters. Of course this is understandable on a show with so many main characters and guest stars.
Let?s see, Hawkgirl can smash things and fly?sounds like a crappy Superman to me. Whoa, what?s this? Her Mace is anti-magic? Nobody else in the League can do that! Out of all the Leaguers, Hawkgirl?s inclusion was the biggest concern of many fans. It makes a lot more sense after this episode. Great way to give her something unique.
Crazy demon dimension means boring demons we?ve all seen before right? Not in this case! Screaming hands, big squid guy, and more! The bad guys were weird, disturbing and just plain nuts. Just the way they should have been.
Sniff! Grundy?s dead?didn?t that scene with Hawkgirl bring a tear to your eye? Sure Grundy?s going to be back?cause he always comes back, but if he doesn?t that sure was a great way to go.
The Terror Beyond was a great episode that I wasn?t expecting. Even the Defenders tribute didn?t seem forced at all. Though some of Grundy?s ?Hulk? lines were a little out there. It was a great idea and the writers just ran with it to create a lot of great moments, and flesh out a lot of characters. It?s episodes like this that were missing from the first season.
