Hawkgirl Action Figure

When Mattel first announced the new Justice League figures, fans noticed that Hawkgirl was mysteriously missing. While Mattel did have the mold and sculpt for her, they didn?t believe that Hawkgirl would see, and were waiting to decide what to do with her. It?s been nearly a year now, and between rumors of Comic Book store exclusive, store exclusive, mail-away, etc? she?s finally shown up in the United States as a Diamond/Target exclusive for one month and then at all major retailers after that. For those of you that don?t know, Diamond is the distributor for comic book stores. On August 27th, Comic Book stores got their special cases of the Mega Armor wave which contains the exclusive Hawkgirl. The Mega Armor wave also includes ?new? versions of Flash, Batman and Superman. Hawkgirl is packed three to a case at comic book stores, and as of this review, has not been seen at Target yet, but she will likely be packed at one or two per case. Comic Book stores usually do not sell figures at retail price, and Hawkgirl will likely be marked up. I paid $10.95 for mine, and I?d expect her to go for at least $10-$20 at a store.

Packaging

The packaging is in line with previous carded Justice League figures. She has a blue card, so she won?t fit in with the old red card figures, but that?s a minor complaint. For MOC collectors, she?ll fit in fine.

Sculpt

Like the rest of the Justice League figures, she?s sculpted beautifully. It looks like they pulled her straight from the TV show. Her wings are attached in a not so accurate manner, but it doesn?t really detract from the figure. She?s about the right height with the rest of the Mattel figures, but the line has always suffered from various scale problems, so she stands at about Flash/Superman height.

Accessories

Hawkgirl comes with the stand that came with the other first and second wave Justice League figures. Since the first six figures already spelled out ?Justice League? Hawkgirl is ?added? on in the front with a blank stand. It really does look sort of ugly, since the words aren?t centered, but I can?t think of any other way to add Hawkgirl to the display without re-sculpting all seven bases, which is obviously unreasonable.

Her mace is a nice touch since none of the other characters came with any accessories. It seems a bit too small, but otherwise it?s accurate.

Articulation

She has the same articulation as Wonder Woman, which means crappy leg articulation and hair that blocks her neck. She basically just has two shoulder joints and that?s it.

Overall

I must say that this is a nice figure, and it?s a shame that she?s going to be so hard to get. I think Mattel is underestimating the number of kids who want the entire Justice League. Sure Hawkgirl might test low with the kids, but the difference is that the League itself tests high. Kids want all seven?then they want three or four Batman/Superman and Flash.

The articulation of the figure is poor, but I think it?s something we?re used too. With new articulation being added in 2004, we should see more toys that are fun to play with. It?s unknown whether or not Hawkgirl will be re-released with the new articulation, but hopefully she?ll be kept in cases for a while so that everyone has a chance to complete their league.
